EC Chair of Automotive

The formation of the Automotive Chair was to establish and advance an effective connection between Higher Education and the Automotive Manufacturing Industry in the Eastern Cape, grow and support manufacturing networks and ecosystems and increase collaboration.

The Automotive Chair also influences and develops new academic programmes and curricula to meet the needs of industry.  The education and training of students and professionals in automotive engineering, focusing on manufacturing and component development will be of key importance. 


The Automotive Chair also intensifies international co-operations between Nelson Mandela University, AIDC-EC, and the global automotive industry, as well as supporting Eastern Cape car manufacturers and component suppliers in engineering, research services, and projects. It also aims to establish new research and development initiatives in the field of new technologies, energy systems, materials, and manufacturing technology guided by the following objectives:

  • Financially support undergraduate students to complete their research projects

  • Financially support master’s degree and PhD students to complete their studies at NMU

  • Develop interns in the engineering field
