Updated: Jun 20, 2024

As South Africa commemorated the 48th anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings on the 16th of June, the Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) actively took part in these Youth Day celebrations joining the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, at Debe Nek in the Amathole District Municipality in Eastern Cape.

While these celebrations form part of the government’s efforts to preserve the legacy of class 1976 for the extraordinary strides in the struggle against apartheid, extensively government continues to inspire today’s youth to take advantage of opportunities provided to them. Thus, ensuring that this spirit of 1976 remains lively.

There are many initiatives that are designed to improve the socio-economic prospects of young people in this province. Since 2019, about 13 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) have invested over R1 billion, benefitting 15,755 young people in the province.

In the same spirit of relentlessness that has been demonstrated through leading the change towards a transformed automotive sector in the province - there are programs aimed at preparing the youth for the skills needed to be sustainable in the future.

The AIDC-EC exhibited its STEAM Program for school going learners, University Programs (uYilo and eNtsa), as well as the Graduate Development Program.

The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) supports learners in grades 9-12 to improve their Maths and Science subjects.

uYilo is an incubation programme that aims to catalyse SMMEs and innovators to develop products and services within the electric mobility value chain, while eNtsa focus on the growth of small enterprises in the automotive sector, while doubling on production numbers. Lastly, the Graduate Development Programme supports interns with leadership development and accessing the job market. In the AIDC-EC Graduate programs, this is where engineers are trained in technical skills through Tier 1 or 2 of the automotive component sectors, to name a few.

The Eastern Cape Premiere, Mr Oscar Lubabalo Mabuyane began his keynote address by saluting young people in the province who trickled in large numbers headed for polls at voting stations during the 2024 General Elections, and especially first-time voters.

“Our theme for this year’s Youth Month is Actively Advancing Socio-economic Gains of Our Democracy”, and that is why as government we will not rest while multitudes of young people are sitting at home not working in staggering numbers. Today we are here to launch an ambitious R5 Billion program catapulted through investment by the provincial government. When I was making my way here, I was informed of another added injection to the tune of R2 billion”, said Mabuyane.

The Premiere alluded that these are opportunities to bolster the economic participation of young people within the province.
