eMobility and Climate Change Mitigation
Background
The eMobility and Climate Change Mitigation Business Unit is a focused unit dedicated to driving the transition to sustainable transportation solutions and mitigating the impacts of climate change by tackling three core challenges:
1 - Reducing transport-related carbon emissions,
2 - Overcoming infrastructure and technology barriers to electric vehicle adoption, and;
3 - Ensuring a just and inclusive transition that supports local communities and industries in the automotive sector.
The eMobility & Climate Change Mitigation Business Unit responds directly to the South African Automotive Masterplan 2035 (SAAM2035) and the Eastern Cape Automotive Masterplan 2035 by positioning itself as a driver of sustainable growth, industrial competitiveness, and social equity.
In line with SAAM2035’s objectives of expanding local production and deepening value chains, the unit strengthens domestic supply chains, supports innovation hubs, and invests in skills development to ensure South Africa’s automotive sector remains globally competitive.
The unit is responsible for implementing the Eastern Cape Electric Vehicle Strategy and Roadmap 2024.
Within the Eastern Cape, the country’s automotive heartland, the unit focuses on building charging networks, piloting electric vehicle fleets, and collaborating with provincial authorities to create enabling policies that reduce transport emissions while stimulating regional economic growth.
Recognising the importance of inclusivity, the unit advances a just transition by retraining workers from traditional automotive and energy industries and partnering with municipalities to safeguard vulnerable communities. Public awareness campaigns further encourage behavioural change, ensuring citizens are active participants in the transition.
By weaving together industrial policy alignment, infrastructure expansion, technological innovation, and social justice, the Business Unit supports both national and provincial policy frameworks, creating a resilient, equitable, and sustainable mobility ecosystem that meets the 2035 goals.
