Future Skills and Sustainable Energy

Background

Due to various changes in the automotive industry, we have to ensure academic programmes for tertiary institutions are in alignment to trends in the industry.
The automotive industry is undergoing changes in terms of drive train technologies as well as autonomous driving. In order to ensure our skills are aligned to this change, we are supporting young people in engineering studies to ensure we have the requisite skills for the automotive industry.

Focus Areas

The unit is working for effective coordination and Implementation of SAAM 2035 and NEV Policy in the Eastern Cape by 2035.

Curriculum Development

Due to various changes in the automotive industry, we have to ensure academic programmes for tertiary institutions are in alignment to trends in the industry.

The FSSE unit has engaged tertiary institutions and commenced projects to ensure alignment between academia and automotive industry.

Energy Management

In the last few years the country experienced severe challenges in delivering energy to end-users. This phenomenon loadshedding, has been detrimental to businesses. It is mainly caused by old power stations that should have been retired years ago, experiencing breakdowns resulting in manufacturers suffering production downtime.

The unit is providing inputs at task meetings at The Business Chamber and Eskom Nuclear Unit to develop energy supply solutions in the province.

Skills Development

The automotive industry is undergoing changes in terms of drive train technologies as well as autonomous driving. In order to ensure our skills are aligned to this change, we are supporting young people in engineering studies to ensure we have the requisite skills for the automotive industry.

The unit is managing projects at tertiary institutions to ensure skills are developed in line with industry requirements.

Objectives

The Future Skills and Sustainable Energy interventions has seen over 2 538 individuals lives positively impacted in various areas.

STEM Project

Supporting the improvement of maths and science skills for learners at school level. The beneficiaries of the project are the learners at schools in the Eastern Cape.

Chair of Automotive

Supporting students at university to gain the skills as demanded by the industry due to changes the automotive sector is undergoing.

Walter Sisulu University Bursaries

Supporting students with financial aid to complete their studies in engineering studies for the automotive sector.

Career Expos

Career expos are held on an annual basis. The purpose of the project is to educate and inform learners of the careers available in the automotive industry. The session also informs learners wrt the requirements to qualify for further studies at tertiary institutions.

Walter Sisulu University Lab Equipment

Providing laboratory equipment for the University in order to enhance teaching in the classroom and give students engineering skills in line with industry requirements.

Energy Management

Supporting the implementation of power solutions to ensure energy security. The automotive Tier suppliers and OEMs are direct beneficiaries of providing the security of supply to manufacturers in the sector.
