Aftermarket Support Programme

Background

Despite its importance, the Eastern Cape automotive aftermarket sector faces several challenges that hinder its optimal growth and development.

The Aftermarket Support Programme addresses a variety of challenges faced by SMMEs struggling to comply with automotive industry standards, which restricts them from accessing markets within the automotive value chain.

Focus Areas

01

SMME Readiness for Aftermarket Projects

Assiting SMMEs to comply with automotive industry standards such as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), general business administration and soft skills, appropriate structures to accommodate learner placements for training, which is a requirement for such placements.

03

02

Delayed Responses from SMMEs

SMMEs are not always technologically savvy, and during the day they are focused on vehicle repairs, which leaves them with limited time to use their phones.

Limited Availability of Training Service Providers

The Aftermarket Support Programme Technical Training consists of two programmes, the Skills Programme and Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL).

Objectives

The unit contributes to the automotive aftermarket sector in the Eastern Cape, which benefits both businesses and consumers while also providing SMMEs with the means to grow, succeed, and contribute to economic growth and development.

Aftermarket Support Incentive Fund

The department aims to secure additional funding to provide more tools, equipment, and machinery. Increased funding will enable more SMMEs to benefit.

Access to vehicle maintenance markets

One of the interventions aimed at addressing HDI SMME needs is government fleet repairs, noting that funds allocated for government fleet in the Eastern Cape are currently spent outside the province.

OHS Compliance

The department currently has a service provider that conducts OHS audits for SMMEs, however, there has not yet been an intervention to address the gaps identified in these audits to ensure full compliance.

Automotive Technical Skills Training

To achieve this objective, the department aims to secure additional funding from SETAs, as this project aligns with their objectives. Securing funding from SETAs will enable the programme to expand and allow more SMMEs to receive training.

Aftermarket Awareness Campaign

Additional avenues to create awareness include working closely with the Marketing, Communication, and Events department. This involves engaging with both local and national radio stations to reach a broader audience within the automotive sector, including both SMMEs and stakeholders.
