On the 23 of February 2025, CHERY-OMODA-JAECOO South Africa launched the OMODA C9 and JAECOO 7 Plug-In Hybrids in Cape Town. This milestone event marked a significant leap forward in hybrid vehicle innovation.

The Automotive Industry Development Centre - Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) was honoured to be part of this landmark occasion, demonstrating its commitment to driving growth and innovation in the region. The AIDC-EC's support for the launch underscores its mission to foster a competitive and sustainable automotive sector in the Eastern Cape.
Hybrid and Plug-in hybrid cars are game changers for the automotive sector. Hybrid cars combine a conventional engine with an electric motor, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. While plug-in hybrids take it a step further, allowing drivers to charge the battery from an external power source, enabling extended electric-only driving. This innovative technology offers a smoother, quieter ride, lower operating costs, and a reduced carbon footprint – making it an attractive option for environmentally conscious drivers and those looking to save on fuel costs.

The excitement at the launch was elevated by the unveiling of the thrilling Safari Drive Challenge, dubbed "CAPE TO ADDO," which aims to evaluate the efficiency and driving patterns of participants from six countries: South Africa, Malaysia, the UK, Indonesia, Australia, and Thailand.
The challenge involves drivers navigating the scenic Garden Route, starting from Cape Town and passing through Hermanus, Pearly Beach, Swellendam, Mossel Bay, Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma, and concluding at Addo. Each participant will complete the route on a single full charge and a full tank, with the goal of determining which country exhibits the most efficient consumption and modest driving behaviour.

Setting the stage for a thrilling competition, Mr. Tony Liu, CEO of CHERY-OMODA-JAECOO South Africa, warmly welcomed attendees to the SAFARI DRIVE CHALLENGE. With international participants gathered. Mr. Liu expressed his heartfelt gratitude for their presence and extended his best wishes for a successful and exciting challenge.
To support the growing demand for electric vehicles, the AIDC-EC has installed a state-of-the-art 47kWh Autel Charger at Tsitsikhaya Lodge in Storms River. This charger will not only provide participants with a convenient and fast charging solution but also showcase the Eastern Cape's commitment to sustainable mobility and electric vehicle adoption.
