Accelerating Africa's Low-Carbon Transition: AIDC-EC Participates in Electric Mobility Capacity Building Dialogue

AIDC Eastern Cape

On 11 February 2025, the Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) collaborated with key stakeholders that hosted the Smart Energy Solutions for Africa (SESA), a capacity-building initiative focused on knowledge and skills enhancement in the electric mobility ecosystem and clean technology solutions. Held at Nelson Mandela University, under the theme ‘Sustainable Energy and e-Mobility Technology Solutions to Support Africa's Low-Carbon Transition’ - the event provided a platform for experts to share insights and best practices in driving the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions.

As a key participant and panellist, the AIDC-EC showcased its pioneering initiative to roll out the universal public electric vehicle infrastructure across the Eastern Cape Province. This ambitious project aims to keep pace with the anticipated surge in New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) adoption and expand supporting charging infrastructure. A transformation that is driven by climate mitigation legislation and technological advancements, prompting government policy support for EV manufacturing and sales in South Africa.

On behalf of the Eastern Cape Government, the AIDC-EC has been actively engaged in automotive policy lobby and advocacy; and participating in national automotive initiatives. Ms Bopang Khutsoane, Executive Manager of e-Mobility and Climate Mitigation Unit, represented the AIDC-EC and shared valuable insights on the organisation's pioneering work in electric mobility.

Ms Khutsoane participated in the panel discussion that focused on Harnessing the power of collaboration – how public-private partnerships can propel the transition to e-mobility and sustainable energy, alongside Ms Asanda Xawuka from Coega Development Corporation and Mr Grant Tobias from The Business Place Network.

The agency’s e-Mobility and Climate Mitigation Unit is dedicated to supporting the development of a sustainable and environmentally friendly automotive sector in the Eastern Cape. The unit focuses on promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, developing green technologies, and encouraging sustainable manufacturing practices.

The AIDC-EC is intentional about being robust and fully active in driving conversations, collaborations, and innovations that shape the future of mobility. Through our participation in discussions like this, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting a low-carbon transition and promoting sustainable economic growth in the Eastern Cape.
