Accelerating EV Charging Infrastructure in the Eastern Cape province

In addition to the 13 EV charging stations that the AIDC-EC is rolling out in the Eastern Cape, additional off-grid EV charging stations will be added to the network in the next 5 years.

On Tuesday the 8th of October 2024, the Automotive Industry Development Centre -Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) solidified its commitment to driving growth and innovation in the Eastern Cape's automotive sector by entering into partnership with Zero Carbon Charge (CHARGE), marking a significant milestone in this journey, as they jointly launched a R11.4 billion off-grid electric vehicle and truck charging stations development.

This initiative is aimed at empowering a greener future. It is more than just an infrastructure development project – it is a step towards a sustainable future transport. With 29 new off-grid, solar-powered charging stations, and the intention to reduce South Africa's carbon footprint and contribute to climate goals - the support by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government in streamlining regulatory processes, enabled the AIDC-EC to break ground on this ambitious project.

Key Highlights:

- 18 electric vehicle charging stations and 11 off-grid electric truck charging stations

- Creation of over 3,260 employment opportunities

- Revenue generation for local landowners

- Loadshedding-proof charging stations

Driven by the mandate to transform the automotive sector this partnership aligns with the AIDC-EC mission to foster a competitive and sustainable automotive ecosystem. By promoting local manufacturing of electric vehicles and advancing domestic battery technology, we are unlocking new opportunities for growth and innovation.

"This partnership is a significant step forward for the Eastern Cape, positioning us as a hub for sustainable transport solutions. We are committed to supporting initiatives that drive economic growth, transformation, and environmental sustainability", said the AIDC-EC CEO, Thabo Shenxane.

Benefits for the Eastern Cape:

- Enhanced economic competitiveness

- Job creation and skills development

- Increased investment in the region

- Reduced carbon emissions

As the automotive sector continues to evolve, the AIDC-EC is poised to play a leading role in shaping the future of mobility in South Africa - driven by innovation and collaboration with Zero Carbon Charge.
