The CEO of Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape, Mr. Thabo Shenxane, invited members of the media to the launch of a multi-phased roll-out initiative of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure to support and encourage use of electric vehicle, and promote beneficiation thereof in two regions consecutively.
The public and universal EV Charging Stations launch, catapulted by AIDC-EC took place at Dan’s Lodge in Libode at the OR Tambo region on Thursday, 23rd May, and the second launch on Friday 24th of May at Virgin Active on Esplanade Quigney in Buffalo City Metro Municipality in East London. This is the first roll-out aimed at keeping pace with the anticipated surge in adoption of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and the expansion of the required supporting charging infrastructure. To date, there have been 5 600 NEV units registered and this number is expected to increase significantly over the next few years.
The global automotive landscape is undergoing profound transformation triggered by climate mitigation and adaptation legislation as well as the associated technological disruptions causing for progress to be made in creating an environment suitable for EVs. This has resulted to government policy support the manufacturing and sales of EVs in South Africa coupled with the need to reduce carbon emissions.
Figures released by industry body, The Automotive Business Council (NAAMSA), the sale of EVs accounted for in South Africa were 1,080 units in 2023. These launch events follow AIDC-EC’s relentless efforts to identify strategic locations for these charging stations, ensuring widespread accessibility across the province. By partnering with local stakeholders and leveraging existing infrastructure, this project aims to provide seamless charging solutions and beyond.
The EV White Paper, published in December 2023, underscores the importance of transitioning to EVs as both a challenge and an opportunity for the South African automotive industry. This was welcomed by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government through the Premier and MEC Mlungisi Mvoko in its submissions.
The occasion was graced with the presence of the MEC of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism; and Finance, Mlungisi Mvoko and The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition . As we power ahead the Eastern Cape stands poised to lead the charge towards a cleaner, greener future for all.
