AIDC-EC joined EC Government in Women's Day commemoration.

On the 9th of August 2024 the Automotive Industry Development Centre - Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) joined Women’s Day celebrations by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, led by Premier Oscar Lubabalo Mabuyane in Misgund under Koukamma Local Municipality in Sarah Baartman District Municipality.

The EC government held these official celebrations in response to many lamentations of neglect by government that have been levelled by women from that area. Mabuyane handed over 6 new tractors to women at the helm of leading economic growth through agriculture. In his keynote address he acknowledged the significant impact played by agriculture led by women - young and old in bolstering the diverse economy there.

''R7.4 billion has been set aside to benefit women in the Eastern Cape. The housing projects we are doing here through partnerships with Department of Human Settlements, we have launched housing projects in Storms River prioritising women owned contractors. This does not only provide shelter but also empowers women entrepreneurs. We are organising skills and entrepreneur workshops to develop the entrepreneurial skills to women. Not limited to these, these are some of the legacy projects that are underway”, said Mabuyane.

The AIDC-ECs participation was through the office of MEC Nonkqubela Peters- Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT). These commemorations were held under the theme “Count her in accelerating Gender Equity through Economic Development”. This theme strives towards development of women and affirms the commitment to accelerating equality through economic development.

Through this participation, the AIDC-EC cemented its support for unwavering efforts that break barriers and accelerate equal opportunities for all women, across levels and areas of life. The agency has been advocating for and making strides in becoming an Employment Equity Bill responsive organisation. It has also begun a campaign showcasing AIDC-EC women who are at the heart of chanelling transformation in the automotive sector.

The agency heeded the call from the MEC and also donated much needed blankets and sanitary items to women and children in the Koukamma Local Municipality region.
