From Backyard Repairs to Industrial Contracts: The Transformation of Syra Trading

In the heart of Hombe A/A, Lusikisiki, a local automotive business is undergoing a profound transformation. Syra Trading, owned by Mr Sipho Malindi, has long been a pillar of mechanical support for its community, though its operations faced significant environmental and structural hurdles.

The Challenge: Operations in the Open

When officials from the Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) first conducted an on-site Gap Analysis in March 2024, they found a business with immense potential but limited resources. Mechanical repairs and panel beating were conducted entirely outdoors in the yard of the owner’s premises, leaving the work vulnerable to the elements and poor quality of work. With no formal workshop, parts, tools, and equipment had to be stored inside a room in the family homestead. The business lacked formal process flows and professional signage, which limited its ability to access the market.

Recognising the growth potential, AIDC-EC stepped in to provide a strategic injection of modern tools and a mobile service unit. The support focused on converting Syra Trading into a mobile servicing unit: capable of both high-end diagnostic work and efficient mobile servicing.

The investment included:

  • Mobile service Unit: A custom-made and fitted canopy was installed on Mr Malindi’s bakkie, transforming the vehicle into a mobile professional toolbox capable of reaching clients in remote areas.

  • High-Tech Diagnostics: The delivery of a state-of-the-art diagnostic machine, valued at R90,000, with a comprehensive suite of timing kits.

  • Workshop Infrastructure: A suite of professional garage tools was provided to ensure that fixed-site repairs met industry standards for safety and accuracy.

The transition from "yard repairs" to a fully equipped mobile auto repair service has fundamentally changed the trajectory of the business. By moving operations indoors and adopting digital diagnostic capabilities, Syra Trading has successfully bridged the gap between a local service provider and a technical partner capable of managing complex auto diagnostic services.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the professionalisation of Syra Trading has been anchored by a significant personal achievement for its owner. Mr Malindi participated in one of the AIDC-EC Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) projects, successfully qualifying as a Diesel Mechanic in KSD on 18 September 2025, which is an internationally recognised red seal certificate.

This internationally recognised red seal certificate is a testament to his hard work and commitment to mastering his craft. As an SMME owner, this certification brings tangible benefits to the business.

The ultimate proof of this transformation was witnessed during a recent monitoring visit. “Thanks to the enhanced capacity provided by AIDC-EC, I have now successfully secured a 12-month contract with the Magwa Tea Estate,” said Mr Malindi.

The estate, a critical economic driver in the Eastern Cape, operates a massive fleet of vehicles and agricultural machinery. “Previously, the scale of such a client would have been out of reach; today, Syra Trading is the enhanced partner responsible for keeping that fleet moving,” added Mr Malindi. This partnership not only stabilises Syra Trading’s revenue but also demonstrates that, with the right technical support, rural SMMEs can become indispensable links in the provincial value chain.

With the current momentum and the professionalisation of his service, Mr Malindi is now positioned to secure this relationship for the long term, moving beyond a single contract toward becoming a sustainable regional leader in automotive and machinery maintenance.
