EV charging network opens new opportunities for women and local businesses in Willowmore

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government is helping build a greener future through a public electric-vehicle charging network. The project is not only about the strategic placement of chargers on high-traffic roads. It is also about creating opportunities for small towns, local businesses, and women entrepreneurs.

The Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) has rolled out 15 public EV charging stations across the province. These chargers are placed along important travel routes, including the Coastal Route, the Frontier Country Route, and the Karoo Heartland Route.

During Women’s Month, AIDC-EC is highlighting the role of women in this growing green economy. Women entrepreneurs and property owners host four of the 15 fast chargers. This gives women a direct role in innovative technology and infrastructure.

The charging stations are also assisting nearby businesses. When EV drivers stop to charge their cars, they engage in the local economy in the area. Thus, increasing foot traffic to local businesses.

The project shows that clean energy initiatives can grow local economies. It also shows how the Eastern Cape provincial government is supporting women to partake in these new industries, which are often led by men, including technology, transport, and automotive infrastructure.

Q: Please tell us about yourself and your business. 

Zaaymans Garage is a fuel station, workshop, and Grab & Go coffee shop situated in the Karoo town of Willowmore. Since stepping into a 50% co-ownership role in 2023, I have loved tackling the unique challenges of running a rural enterprise. By hosting the AIDC-EC EV charging station, we are also bridging the gap between traditional fuel and future green technology. This initiative brings much-needed foot traffic to our coffee shop and other businesses in town, proving that women-led businesses can grow and be successfully driven in a small town.

Q: How did your business become a host for an AIDC-EC EV charging station?

AIDC-EC approached Zaaymans Garage after identifying Willowmore as a vital charging point for electric vehicles travelling along the N9 between Graaff-Reinet and George. We proudly accepted the opportunity to host the station on our premises. This partnership allows us to offer charging solutions to EV motorists, positioning our business as an innovative, sustainable hub on a major Karoo travel route.

Q: How has hosting an EV charger helped you as a woman in business?

Being part of the AIDC-EC initiative has given me a powerful platform to show that women entrepreneurs in small Karoo towns can lead the way in innovative industries. Hosting the charger has allowed me to meet and connect with people and travelers who would otherwise never have visited Willowmore. It has also allowed me to prove that, with the right partnerships, women can successfully drive new and exciting initiatives in their communities.

Q: What motivational message do you have for other women during Women’s Month?

This Women’s Month, I want to remind women, especially those in our small rural towns, that your location does not have to limit your potential and your impact on those around you. Do not back down from big challenges or new opportunities. Trust your business instincts, believe in yourself and live by the motto… where there’s a will, there’s a way!
