MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

18 December 2025, East London, Eastern Cape – The Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) hereby advises members of the public and electric vehicle (EV) users that the EV charging station located on Aquarium Road, Quigney, East London, is currently offline and unavailable for public use until further notice.
The temporary service interruption is due to a confirmed fault affecting the charging unit’s input/output (I/O) control board. As a result, multiple system sensors, including door, screen, DC meter, and AC meter sensors, are registering errors, which have rendered the charger inoperable. Preliminary assessments further indicate that the coastal location of the charging station presents unique operational challenges. The site experiences above-average ocean spray and high salt content in the air, which has led to salt ingress affecting sensitive components of the charger. In this instance, corrosion impacted a door sensor, triggering a safety protocol that automatically disables the unit, as the system interprets the charger as being open for maintenance.
While the charging infrastructure is designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, the specific coastal exposure at this location has highlighted additional resilience considerations. AIDC-EC, together with Rubicon, the technical operator, are actively exploring mitigation measures and design adaptations to improve long-term durability and reliability in coastal environments.
Further communication will be issued once the charging station has been fully restored and deemed operational.
In the interim, EV users are encouraged to make use of alternative public charging infrastructure available within the East London area.
Members of the public are advised to verify the operational status and availability of alternative charging stations through recognised EV charging platforms listed below or navigation applications before travel.
